Make a home for wildlife

Today’s activity comes from the National Trust, who have created a ‘50 activities to do in your back garden‘. If you don’t have a garden, you could still go out and collect items to create your wildlife home at home, before placing it somewhere safe in a local park for wildlife to enjoy.

All sorts of animals need homes, so why not try making a bug hotel, a house for a hedgehog, or even a motel for a mouse? Think about the creature you’re making a home for – does it need to be warm, light, dry, dark, cold, or wet? Don’t despair if animals don’t move in straight away. Many will take time to get used to a new place, so check back each day or week to see if any new friends have moved in.

Tangrams

Today’s challenge is all about tangrams! The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape using all seven pieces, which cannot overlap.

Below, I have attached a document with a blank tangram for you to cut out. This document also includes lots of animal outlines for you to try and create using the tans. The solutions are also included so you can check (or sneak a look if you are unsure!). As always, please send any photos in to [email protected]

World Ocean Day

70% OF OUR PLANET IS WATER, AS IS 70% OF THE HUMAN BODY.

WE LIVE ON A BLUE PLANET, PLANET OCEAN.

World Ocean Day for Schools is a free digital platform that curates the most engaging and thought provoking ocean related learning resources for educators. This platform is designed to act as a catalyst to a richer connection with the ocean in a way that complements existing school curriculum. These explorations into all of our water systems culminate with a global celebration in June in conjunction with World Ocean Day every year.

Join The Silly Squad for this Year’s Summer Reading Challenge

With the disruption caused by COVID-19 and the impact of social distancing on schools and public libraries,
The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge has gone digital for 2020.

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4-11 to read during the long summer holiday with
research showing that children’s reading can ‘dip’ severely during the summer if they do not have regular access
to books. This year’s theme will also encourage children to read anything that makes them happy – whether it
be a comic, joke book, poetry, fiction or non-fiction, in digital or print format, from e-book lending through the
public library service or from what they already have at home, with the Summer Reading Challenge official book
collection as a guide.
The new digital Challenge launches today with a whole host of virtual (super silly) events
with guest celebrities and authors. The website is free to access, featuring games, quizzes and
downloadable activities to encourage children and their families to take part in the Challenge at
home. Although library buildings are closed, libraries will also continue to deliver the Challenge through virtual
services and e-lending platforms. You can sign up and get started here.
We’d love you to get involved this summer and join the #SillySquad2020. Head over to the Summer Reading Challenge Facebook page for the virtual launch party from 4pm today, hosted by Sam & Mark from CBBC.
