Year 6 were Scientists this afternoon, investigating biscuits and their dunking times in tea. They made predictions, carried out fair tests and wrote about their experiment and results. The children were unanimous in their findings, with the Custard Cream and Bourbon Cream being the biscuits which could be dunked the longest before finally breaking in the tea.
Everyone in school enjoyed celebrating books yesterday for World Book Day. The children, who were dressed in their PJs with their favourite bedtime story, enjoyed doing a variety of bookish activities. Mrs MacDonald rang the bell several times throughout the day, which meant the children had to ‘drop everything and read’.
Thank you to the families who sent in cakes as part of our Great Bookish Bake Off. The money raised in the cake sale at the end of the day will go right back into buying books for our library, which the children will enjoy.
Finally, a big thank you to all the parents and carers and grandparents who came in to join us for the Big Read at the end of the day. It was lovely to see so many children enjoying stories!
Year 6 had a visit from the school nursing team this afternoon, to talk about resilience. The informative session educated the children about the effects of drugs, smoking and alcohol and how best to handle peer pressure. The children took it in turns to wear beer googles to get a real feel for what negative effects alcohol has on co-ordination. Thank you to the nursing team from all of Year 6.
Year 2 had a great afternoon discussing friendships. Using their knowledge of instructions, they came up with a recipe for making a good friend. A handful of kindness, a spoonful of sharing and a sprinkle of helpfulness were some of the ingredients mentioned. Well done Year 2, we think you perfected the recipe.
Year 1 have been using the story ‘Supertato’ to help them with their writing. The Evil Pea escaped last week and the children went on a journey to find him, which helped them understand verbs. They didn’t manage to find him, but when they came into school this morning, they discovered their friend Supertato had caught him over the weekend! The children were very excited and they all wrote some super sentences about what had happened.
The whole school had a wonderful time watching Robin Hood this morning.

Year 6 were scientists this afternoon, exploring circuits. Not only did they have to find out what certain symbols represent, they also had to build their own working circuits with different functions. We had plenty of light bulbs, buzzers and children full of enthusiasm for Science!
Year 5 really enjoyed watching the BBC 500 Words Live Lesson this morning (especially when they saw, “Hello Year 5 from Cannon Park Primary School in Coventry!” scroll across the screen) which gave a whole host of hints, tips and inspirational ideas to the children on how to write a story in just 500 words. This is an amazing competition that really fires the imagination, and celebrates creativity. Anyone wishing to take part can get some help from Miss Cleveland on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the library.
As well attending a spectacular 500 Words Final at Buckingham Palace where superstar celebrities will read the winning stories live on the radio, six amazing illustrators: Tony Ross, Fiona Lumbers, David McKee, Sue Cheung, David Roberts, and Margaret Sturton – will each be set the task of illustrating one the winning stories.
The winners in each age category will also receive:
Gold Winners – Chris Evans’ height in books and 500 books for their school.
Silver Winners – HRH The Duchess of Cornwall’s height in books.
Bronze Winners – Their own height in books.
There is also a BRAND NEW Prize for 2020 and it doesn’t matter how good your story is just that you enter one. One entrant will be selected at random to receive a fabulous book bundle and an invite to the final (for child plus a parent or guardian). They will also win 500 books for their school – so the more pupils a school has that has entered the more chances they have of winning a brand new library.

We’ve looked at all of the books for our age groups. Now it’s time to get voting to save your favourites before they get knocked out. The first eviction will be on Monday 20 January and subsequently, one book will be knocked out each week in each category until we reach the winners!

Our three week election campaign ended on Thursday as the whole school voted for their party of choice. The children have really enjoyed learning about democracy, which is one of our British Values.
The votes were counted up at the end of the day and, with only two votes in it, the winning party was the Future Technicians. They will now present their ideas to staff on how to develop the school.
